Saving Lives Through Early Detection
Breast Cancer Screenings
About 264,000 women in the United States are diagnosed with breast cancer each year. Each year, about 42,000 women die from the disease.
When breast cancer is detected in its early, localized stage, the 5-year survival rate is 99% – proving that early detection and treatment are the key to surviving this deadly disease. Unfortunately, more than 20% of women in Georgia do not receive regular mammograms or do not receive mammograms at all – usually because they can’t afford it.
All women are recommended to start screening for breast cancer at age 40. For individuals with a family history of breast cancer, earlier screening may be recommended.
Lifesaving Screenings for All
Breast cancer screenings shouldn’t be out of reach for anyone. If you are an uninsured or underinsured patient of a federally qualified Community Health Center or other primary care provider, you may be eligible to receive no-cost breast cancer screenings through Horizons.
You may be referred to us by your primary care provider. When you connect with Horizons, we’ll pair you with a Health Navigator who will work one-on-one with you to:
- Help you obtain a low/no-cost mammogram from one of our healthcare partner providers or hospitals.
- Connect you with follow-up care if your screening uncovers something requiring additional attention.
- Provide you with accurate and reliable information through every step of the process.
- Assist you with transportation to and from treatment if your situation requires it.

Breast Cancer Facts
The information below comes from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Symptoms
While the below symptoms may be present in breast cancer cases, it is vital to note that not all breast cancers cause symptoms. Even if you have none of these symptoms, you should still receive regular mammograms to detect cancer early and maximize your chances of successful treatment.
- Any change in the size or shape of the breast.
- Pain in any area of the breast.
- A discharge from the nipple that isn’t breast milk.
- A new lump in the breast or underarm.
If you have any of these symptoms, immediately see your doctor or call us to discuss screening options.
Risk Factors
While there is no way to predict who will or will not suffer from breast cancer, there are some risk factors that should be considered when determining when you should begin receiving mammograms:
Lifestyle Factors
Some lifestyle factors can increase a woman’s risk of developing breast cancer. While the risk factors above are largely out of a person’s control, these lifestyle factors are things that someone can change to reduce their cancer risk:
Other Screening and Information Services
We also connect patients with colorectal cancer screenings and information.
Horizons can help you be better informed about cancer in general and give you the information you need to discuss other screenings – for prostate, lung, and/or skin cancer – with your doctor.

Andrea’s Story
“I was referred to Horizons for a mammogram by my doctor, which resulted in a breast cancer diagnosis. The navigator helped me through the process from screening all the way through treatment. They also provided me transportation assistance with gas cards. I had to be out of work a lot, and I don’t know how I would have made it to my treatments without this help. I appreciate everything Horizons has done for me. Without them, I might not be here today.”
