#GivingTuesday occurs on the Tuesday following Thanksgiving, Black Friday and Cyber Monday. This year, it falls on December 3rd. And the mission is quite simple: create a national day of giving to kick off the holiday season, “by encouraging charitable activities that support nonprofit organizations.”
Leading up to the day, you can sign up to become a social media ambassador (check out givingtuesday.org for the sign up details) and spread the word to your community. In signing up, you’ll brainstorm with others how to inspire people to participate in this movement, give back in smarter ways and help the world on this special day. They stress that their success is based on assembling a group of diverse individuals—sound interesting? Give their website a peek.
If social media doesn’t suit your fancy, consider submitting a story for the #GivingTuesday community. They’re looking for people to write stories on past and future #GivingTuesday endeavors. Posts can be short (450 words or less) and include things like “Why did you chose to participate in #GivingTuesday?” or “What are your plans for #GivingTuesday this year?” or “Share an example of how you are making an impact.”
While these jobs leading up to the event surely help make their cause an even bigger success, the most important thing you can do is commit to participating in this day of giving back.
Assemble a group of family members (perhaps encourage them to extend their Thanksgiving trip to volunteer together), find a group of friends, a neighbor or even go out and make a difference by yourself. No matter the logistics, this is a day encouraging you to give back in any way you can think of. Get creative, have fun and thank you for making a difference in your community.
